The U.S. Air Force symbol honors the heritage of our past and represents the promise of our future. It retains the core elements of our Air Corps heritage -- the "Arnold" wings and star with circle -- and modernizes them to reflect our aerospace force of today and tomorrow. The symbol has two main parts.

In the upper half, the stylized wings represent the stripes of our strength -- the enlisted men and women of our force. They have been drawn with great angularity to emphasize our swiftness and power, and they are divided into six sections which represent our core competencies -- aerospace superiority, global attack, rapid global mobility, precision engagement, information superiority, and agile combat support.

In the lower half there are a sphere, a star and three diamonds. The sphere within the star represents the globe. It reminds us of our obligation to secure our nation's freedom with Global Vigilance, Reach and Power. The globe also reminds us of our challenge as an expeditionary force to respond rapidly to crises and to provide decisive aerospace power, worldwide.

The area surrounding the sphere takes the shape of a star. The star has many meanings. Its five points represent the components of our one force and family -- our active duty, civilians, Guard, Reserve and retirees. The star symbolizes space as the high ground of our nation's aerospace force. The rallying symbol in all our wars, the star also represents our officer corps, central to our combat leadership.

The star has been framed with three diamonds, which represent our core values -- integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do. The elements come together to form one symbol that presents two powerful images -- at once it is an eagle, the emblem of our nation, and a medal, representing valor in service to our nation.

Air Mobility Command's primary mission is rapid, global mobility and sustainment for America's armed forces. The command also plays a crucial role in providing humanitarian support at home and around the world. The men and women of the Air Mobility Command -- active, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve and civilians -- provide tactical and strategic airlift and aerial refueling for all of America's armed forces. Many special duty and operational support aircraft and stateside aeromedical evacuation missions are also assigned to AMC. On Apr. 1, 1997, stateside-based C-130E/H's and C-21s returned to AMC's stewardship.

U.S. forces must be able to provide a rapid, tailored response with a capability to intervene against a well-equipped foe, hit hard, and terminate quickly. Rapid global mobility lies at the heart of U.S. strategy in this environment -- without the capability to project forces, there is no conventional deterrent. As U.S. forces stationed overseas continue to decline, global interests remain, making the unique capabilities only AMC can provide even more in demand.

As the air component of the United States Transportation Command, AMC serves many customers and, as the single manager for air mobility, AMC's customers have only one number to call for Global Reach.

Airlift aircraft provide the capability to deploy our armed forces anywhere in the world and help sustain them in a conflict. Air refueling aircraft are the lifeline of Global Reach, increasing range, payloads and flexibility. Since Air Force tankers can also refuel Navy, Marine and many allied aircraft, they leverage all service capabilities on land, sea and in the air. Refuelers also have an inherent cargo-carrying capability -- maximizing AMC's lift options

Ramstein Air Base is home of the 86th Airlift Wing. The 723 Air Mobility Squardon (723 AMS) is part of the Air Mobility Command and its headquarters is at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. The 723 AMS is not connected to the 86th Airlift Wing. We are our own group that is based here. We have different commanders and different management. The 723 AMS is the hub of cargo transportation in Europe and is a key factor in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
